1968 was a year of fire for the United States; The assassinations' of Martin Luther King & John F. Kennedy, Anti Vietnam War protests, racial tensions at an all time high, all of which led to peaceful protests during the 1968 Summer Olympics. No protest during the games caused as much backlash as Tommie Smith & John Carlos during the awards ceremony after the 200 Meter Dash Final. Tommie Smith won the Gold Medal breaking the World Record, and John Carlos finished third. During the playing of the national anthem Carlos & Jones raised one fist to the sky while wearing a single black leather glove which represented Black Power and unity, black socks with no shoes to represent poverty, and a beaded necklace to represent the black lives lost to lynching's in America. This silent and peaceful gesture generated immediate backlash and the two athletes were suspended from the Olympics & sent home. This timeless piece feels soft and lightweight, with the right amount of stretch. It's comfortable and flattering for both men and women.
